Hobbies for Couples

30 Best Hobbies for Couples of All Ages (Shared Fun)

The first thing that attracts you towards a partner is shared interests in things. While you may already have some hobbies to do as a couple, others can be developed over time. Indeed, they help keep the relationship healthy.

As someone who has been with the same romantic partner for over 10 years, we have picked up a lot of hobbies. We’ve tried new things, and while some have persisted, some have fizzled away.

In this article, I have tried to showcase all the different hobbies we have tried together and why they were so fun.

30 Couples Hobbies That Are Fun & Memorable

Each hobby idea mentioned below has a two-person element to it. Be it taking care of a plant, or be it having each others’ back while rock climbing.

There are some things that even long-distance couples can try, such as online games. Most of these activities are fairly intimate where you improve the emotional connection with your partner, such as pottery, dance, etc.

I’ve tried to include a fair mix of indoor as well as outdoor activities in this list to keep it well-balanced for everyone!

Indoor At-Home Hobbies

Cooking Together

Couple Cooking Together

As a couple’s activity, cooking together is highly underrated and is one of the top ideas for date night at home. There’s a certain joy in creating a meal from scratch and then finally setting out the plates and eating it.

It’s a partnership where both of you have to be right, and one mistake can ruin the food. This is what makes cooking such a thrilling hobby as a couple.

Baking New Recipes

For those of us who have been cooking together for a while, baking is the next natural upgrade when it comes to a couple’s hobby. Bake a cake to celebrate an anniversary. Christmas is coming up?

Bake cookies during the holidays. Halloween? Bake horror-themed pies. There’s always an excuse to bake together.

Playing Board Games

Couple Enjoying Game Night

Board games are one of the most fun indoor hobbies that a couple indulge in. My girlfriend and I picked up this hobby a while back, and have since developed quite the stack of board games that we play every weekend.

We love everything from a basic game of chess to more complex games like Railroad Inc and Paris: Cité de la Lumière.

Solving Puzzles

One of the newest hobbies that I had with my partner was jigsaw solving. These puzzles such as crosswords, jigsaws, sudoku, and other similar games can be a fun experience to play as a couple.

These help you see where you complement each other and help each other out as a team!

Playing Video Games

Modern-day couples bond well over video games. As a couple, this is all about having each other’s back. This is a great hobby for long-distance couples too, as they can stay connected over the game for hours!

Playing Card Games

Be it a classic game of rummy and solitaire, or be it the modern-day couple games that assign dares to partners, card games can be an interesting hobby to pick up. Card games often involve bluffing, and the real fun is finding out if you can catch the bluff of your partner.

I highly recommend the FYR couples games that have a bunch of adult games in them to spice up your relationship.

Doing DIY Crafts & Projects

DIY Projects

From painting a wall to setting up a bookshelf, and from installing new fittings and pipes to setting up smart-home gadgets — DIY projects can be pretty beneficial for couples.

DIY crafts such as origami, tie and dye, and rock painting are also some good hobby ideas for couples of all ages. They not only allow you to be creative but also help you produce stuff that you can keep as a memoir as home decor.

Painting and Drawing Together

Painting is among the finest things to do with your girlfriend. When my partner and I first started painting, we would draw random inanimate stuff.

However, by now we can paint more complex things, including the way we remember our first date. It is a very romantic experience to sit with a canvas and let your creative juices flow collectively.

Taking Online Courses

No time or age can restrict your self-improvement. Ever since the pandemic hit, we’ve taken up these online courses where we learn about app development and marketing, which has helped our performance at work.

Studying together not only rekindles the memory of college times that we share but also helps keep each other motivated to perform better.

For Couples in Their 20s

Dancing Classes

Dance, in itself, is an expression of love. It is an ideal hobby for couples in their 20s. But hey, that doesn’t mean it has an age limit.

That said, dancing allows you to be in better rhythm and coordination with each other. Furthermore, dancing is an extremely intimate art form and one that will also help sparks fly in your chemistry.

Yoga or Pilates

Waking up at 6 in the morning to practice breathing exercises, followed by long sessions of stretches! Working on your fitness along with your partner is such a “couple goals” moment. Yoga can be quite intimate as you feel your breaths syncing!

Photography Walks

Two benefits come with photo walks. First, you get to click good pictures, and second, you get to explore an area on foot — the best way to experience a place. My partner and I have made it a point to go on long photo walks on every holiday we take. We also create a scrapbook of these images after the holidays.

Trying New Restaurants

While cooking and baking can be fun, it can be quite tedious too. Sometimes, exploring new places to eat can be equally fun. Bored with your regular food? Let’s try an Octopus at a Chinese restaurant. Some couples even have a food map of the world where they tick off the kinds of food they’ve had!

Exploring New Cities

Exploring New City

Exploring a new city with your partner is an excellent way to bond even better with them. You can even prepare a checklist before you head out, and slowly tick things off as you venture into this new city. Make sure you keep a balanced list of both your interests.

For Married Couples

Gardening

Enjoying the ‘green thumb’ with your spouse can be very exciting. Digging up some mud, planting the right seeds, taking turns to water the plants, ensuring there are no pests. Taking care of a plant is almost like taking care of a child and is a very endearing activity that couples can enjoy together.

Pottery Making

Those who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty will be rewarded at the end of a pottery session. This is a really cool married couples’ activity to do, as you shape up pots and pans out of clay.

It was among the oldest hobbies that me and my partner picked up back when we got married. We started with shaping clay and are now shaping our lives together!

Wine or Beer Tasting

Wine is often appreciated better when you know exactly what you’re drinking. My partner and I love attending wine-tasting events all over the country and developing a taste for new wines.

We love to use it as a party trick as well where we can impress our guests with our impeccable knowledge of wine. This can also be tried out with beer.

Learning a New Language

When we were planning to visit Italy for a honeymoon trip, my girlfriend took me to a crash course on Italian. What started off as a week’s crash course ended up becoming a hobby I picked up for years. Now, we can watch all the Fellini films without subtitles.

Language learning is fun not only because you learn a new language, but it also opens up so many new books, movies, and music for you to enjoy!

For Couples in Their 30s

Road Trips

Taking a road trip together is a fun couple’s experience, especially in 30s. There’s just the two of you, out on an adventure.

This is even more fun if you use an old-fashioned paper map and take turns driving. This forms quite the core memory for many couples!

Pro Tip: To make the journey even more interesting and fun, engage in different road trip games for couples.

You can also prepare a list of questions to ask during a road trip and enjoy learning new things about each other!

Staycations

Staycations are really fun to attend, as you can go to a different house and live a different life for a short while. This gives you a break from the everyday monotony of daily life. As a couple, this also helps you get a feel of living together before you move in together.

Playing a Musical Instrument

This is a habit that my girlfriend picked from me, as I’ve been playing the drums for a while. She began learning the guitar, and now we invite our friends over for jam sessions at our home.

It is a good hobby for couples as it allows you to improve your coordination, as well as improvise and surprise each other from time to time!

For Couples in Their 40s

Volunteering for Local Causes

JFK’s iconic words “ask what you can do for your country” come to life when you volunteer for a local cause. Seek donations for a library, raise funds for underprivileged kids – create a positive contribution in the city around you, along with your partner.

Animal Shelter Assistance

As a couple who love animals, my girlfriend and I often volunteer at animal shelters. This helps us bond better and brings out the humane side in both of us. Much like gardening, this is similar to caring for a child.

Cultural Festivals

For couples in their 40s, exploring newness is something that is quite the thrill. Attending cultural festivals such as Dia de Muertos, the Hungry Ghost Festival, the Kite Festival of Guatemala, etc. can be quite an enriching experience as you’re experiencing something very new, but you are also doing that with your special someone.

Outdoor Hobbies

Hiking and Camping

Some couples bond over their love for nature. Imagine living the ‘Into the Wild’ lifestyle with your partner, surrounded by lakes, rivers, and mountains, as you two trek through wild trails with no one else in sight. It is one of the most romantic things that you and your partner can try out.

Biking

Biking is an activity that is good for nature, your health, as well as for your relationship! I love going on long-distance biking trips with my partner, sometimes cutting her past the road, and sometimes just peddling alongside her. Perfect for lazy Sunday afternoons.

Fishing

Often seen as a solo activity, fishing can be enjoyed with your partner as well. The joy of strategizing, switching turns to hold the rod, and the cooking that ensues afterwards – all of it fits in seamlessly.

Rock Climbing

Not only is rock climbing an interesting physical activity, but it is also a mental activity as it requires quite the mental fortitude to keep going. This is a fun hobby to pick up as a couple, as you can keep motivating each other, and even lending a hand to the other when needed.

When you assist your partner while rock climbing, it also helps to build trust between the two of you.

Swimming

Swimming isn’t just a hobby, it’s also a life skill! Swimming regularly with your partner can be a fun hobby to share with your partner be it at a local swimming pool, or in the Mediterranean Sea while you vacation in Greece! It can also be a fun competitive activity to see who can cross the pool first.

Beach or Park Cleanups

There are some things you do for money, and then there are things you do for your soul. Volunteering activities such as beach and park cleanups help you enjoy these places even more. Go out there and set an example!

Final Thoughts!

While not every hobby is for everyone, the important thing is to give it a shot! When I started, I had no idea I would enjoy swimming so much. However, I now have a new common interest with my partner, as well as a skill for life.

Remember to try out everything because you never know what you might end up enjoying! This would not only let you spend some quality time together but also allow you to customize the home around you just the way you want.

And finally, these are good for the relationship as well as your personal growth.
