Distance, in a relationship, can be quite a bummer. However, there are many online long-distance relationship games that couples can connect over, play, and enjoy quality time together.
The phone games are one of the best ways to keep each other entertained and connected when you’re not physically in the same place.
My partner and I spent long hours playing them during my time away. We used to plan special game nights. Needless to say, we’ve spent 10 years together, and the LDR stage went by pretty smoothly.
Top 10 Games for Long Distance Couples You Must Try Together
In the list below, I have shared some of the best games based on my personal experience. They range from innocuous and inquisitive questions to a spicy game of strip poker.
No matter which phase of the relationship you are in, these LDR games will surely make your virtual time together more fun and enjoyable.
1. Never Have I Ever
A fun game to play when you want to get drunk with your long-distance partner, Never Have I Ever is an all-time classic.
Not only do you enjoy seeing your partner get drunk, but you can also get to know them better in this simple yet thought-provoking game.
How To Play:
- Ask your partner a question that starts with “Never Have I Ever …..” and then suffix it with something you want to know about them (Never Have I Ever gone skinny dipping).
- If they have, they take a shot. If they haven’t, they let you know.
- Keep taking turns and asking each other Never Have I Ever questions.
Bonus: There’s an exciting twist to this game, Never Done That, which is exclusively available on this app for adult couples.
2. Would You Rather
Would You Rather is another excellent questions-based game that couples can play on phone. It’s ideal for those in early phase of a relationship.
It is similar to Never Have I Ever and is played if you just want to know more about your partner without involving drinking.
What separates the two games is that instead of a yes/no questions, you give your partner a choice here.
How To Play:
- Ask your partner a question with two choices that begin with ‘Would You Rather’. (Example: Would You Rather go to the mountains or chill at the beach)
- Your partner chooses one of the two choices.
- Take turns asking each other these questions.
3. Truth or Dare
An age-old classic, Truth or Dare is a fun couple’s game to play when you’re with each other. However, even when you are in a long-distance relationship, this game can prove to be quite entertaining.
Simply turn on your webcam and start giving tasks to each other. Make sure to make good use of the environment around you for the best tasks!
How To Play:
- Ask your partner to choose between Truth or Dare.
- If they choose Truth, ask them a question you have always wanted to ask. If they choose Dare, give them a daring task to complete.
- Take turns asking each other Truth or Dare.
4. Distance Charades
This is similar to playing charades in person, except that you are doing this over a video call. Instead of going with the typical movie route, you can choose different subjects — celebrities, words, etc.
It’s one of the simplest yet effective games to play without anything, helping you keep your bond strong when you’re far from each other.
How To Play:
- Decide on a theme before you begin the game (Example: movies).
- Think of a movie title and try to act out either the title itself, or a scene from the movie.
- Your partner has to guess the word/movie you are depicting.
- Take turns making each other guess.
5. Let’s Get Deep
When played offline, this is a popular card game for couples that gets you and your partner into deep and meaningful conversations.
However, when you play Let’s Get Deep online, it still does the same thing, but instead of drawing cards, you either read out directly from a PDF or interact with cards on the screen.
By the time you’re done playing a few rounds, you’ll feel a deeper, more intellectual connection with your partner.
How To Play:
- Click on the cards with deep questions.
- Both of you answer every question.
- Take turns asking each other these thought-provoking questions.
6. How Well Do You Know Me?
Different games can be played across different stages of relationship. If you happen to be in a long distance relationship but have been dating for a while, ‘How well do you know me’ is one of the best games to try out.
The game helps you understand how in sync you are with your partner, and how many little details about each other have you noticed over time.
How To Play:
- Ask your partner a personal question about yourself (what was my nickname while growing up).
- If they get it right, they score a point.
- Take turns asking these questions to each other.
7. Strip Poker
Long-distance does not mean that you can’t get a little freaky with your partner. One of the best ways to get things hot and heavy over a video call is to play Strip Poker.
It’s my favorite game to play over the phone with my boyfriend. As articles of clothing drop one by one, so do your inhibitions and you open up more and more to your partner — physically, as well as emotionally.
How To Play:
- Set up a game of poker online.
- Whoever loses the round takes off an article of clothing.
- By the end of the game, you’ll both be stripped completely open.
8. This or That
A game that you can play at multiple stages in your long-distance love relationship, This or That gives you and your partner a space to ask each other for your preferences.
The honesty comes out here because, in this game, the answers to This or That questions have to come quickly. This game helps you know your partner better, as well as make quick decisions.
How To Play:
- Ask a ‘This or That’ question (Candlelight date night or retro-themed date night?).
- Your partner has to quickly answer the question by choosing their preference.
- You can take turns asking each other questions, or one partner can ask a set of questions too.
9. Hangman
Hangman is a classic that you’ve probably been playing since your school days. However, when you play hangman as a couple, you can make it even more personal and interesting by including words and phrases from the memories you share with your partner.
This makes the classic a little more intimate.
How To Play:
- Choose a word from your shared experiences. Example: the name of the cafe where you went for your first date.
- Create as many dashes as there are alphabets in the word.
- Your partner has to guess the alphabet to complete the word.
- For every wrong answer, draw a hangman. Once the hanging is complete, you win. If they guess correctly before that, they win.
10. Uno
The ultimate party game, I personally love playing Uno with my partner. Be it when we were dating over distance, all the way to today.
The game brings out the competitive best in us, and it’s a nice way to tease your partner a little when you ask them to draw 4. These games tend to go on for hours and are a lot of fun.
How To Play:
- Install the Uno app on both your phones and share the room ID with your partner.
- Once they join in, you can play the classic card game with them.
Final Thoughts!
At one point in my relationship, I had to move to Canada for a few months, while my partner was in California. It was then that I realized that the key to maintaining a successful partnership over long distance lies in constant interaction and shared experiences.
One final pro tip that I’d like to share before I conclude is to not keep a score. While that sounds stupid in a game, you also have to realize that these are not mere games. This is quality time you’re spending with your partner, and scoring makes it competitive.
Enjoy the game, and get to know your partner better, but maybe don’t make it a competition.
